That being said what I love about it is what it is from an artistic standpoint. I'm definitely not gonna try to convince you to like it if you don't like it. Shadow of the colossus is one of my favorite games of all time behind Dark Souls and System Shock 2 I know it's against the patientgamers idea but I do feel like for a lot of people SOTC is one of those games where you really had to play it when it came out to appreciate it. I have no idea where this rant was going I just really love Shadow of the Colossus. I was able to look past it playing the remake cause I was too busy creaming myself, but it's totally understandable why someone coming in fresh wouldn't be able to ignore it. It also wasn't that far timewise from games where you couldn't control the camera at all, so the jumpy camera didn't seem like that much of a big deal. I also think children are more adaptive to that sort of thing. It's like going back to play one of the original Tomb Raiders, I find it damn near impossible now, but back then it was a piece of piss.

Sure the controls are ass, but honestly at the time I didn't notice. The size of the colossi and the buildings was also super impressive for the time. It was so different to anything I'd ever played before, there weren't really 'walking simulators' in 2005, so the desolate empty world was incredibly striking. I just thought the cardboard sleeve looked cool. I can't speak for anyone else, but when the original came out I was 12, and the internet wasn't like it is now, so I had heard absolutely nothing about this weird looking game I found in a second hand game shop. I do think that a lot of the hype for the remake was nostalgia, and I can see why someone who didn't play the original might not like it as much. I want to love the game, but the game keeps getting in the way.ĭisclaimer- Shadow of the Colossus is my favourite game, and I had the remake on preorder pretty much as soon as it was available. It's feeling like a chore.ĭon't get me wrong - clinging on while a Colossus shook you was pretty fun at first, but it's certainly not enough to entertain me 16 times in a row. If I fall off, I repeat the exact same process again.

When I finally get to a Colossus, I get a rush of excitement, followed by a period of tedious frustration as I patiently hold on while getting in the occasional stab. I've heard other games (usually incorrectly) criticized as "walking simulators", but in-between Colossi I can only describe the game as a horse-riding simulator, and one with bad controls. So much of the game is tedious, and frankly, boring at times. but that art seems so damn hard to reach.

I can see how the player is meant to feel sorry for each slain foe, how the emptiness of the world is supposed to resonate with the player. The atmosphere is fantastic, the music is perfect, and it's given me some real feelings of excitement.

Started the PS4 remake a few days ago, and I've now killed 9 (edit: now 13) colossi.
